Piano hinges get their name from the fact that they are usually used on the entire length of a piano lid. This is because a piano hinge is made from very thin material. This is because the load that is bared by both the hinge and mounting material is distributed over a larger area. In applications where the hinge must be compact and as unobtrusive as possible piano hinges work extremely well. This is why these hinges are usually used on pianos regular doors and are also known as continuous hinges.
At Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products we have created a very large selection of continuous hinges to ensure that the perfect hinge is available for your application. Our hinges can be made from 316 Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Steel and Stainless Steel with material thicknesses from ranging .025" to .180". Our high quality 316L stainless steel and stainless steel hinges are great for applications where regular steel parts would be susceptible to corrosion. An aluminium piano will also be great at preventing corrosion and it will weigh 1/3 less. Multiple finishes are also available including galvanized, mill, polished as well as several plating options including brass, chrome, nickel and zinc.

Weld-on hinges or barrel hinges function just like most hinges, however they are mounted with a weld instead of fasteners. This allows them to be mounted to a variety of surfaces where it may be impractical to mount a standard hinge and are also great for heavy duty applications. In situations where the mounting material is very thick, fastening becomes difficult as holes must be drilled and then tapped in order to affix the hinge to the material. The trucking and trailer industry have used these hinges to create dependable doors and gates so that their strength and reliability have already been proven. Barrel hinges have a weld guide to create a larger weld area for faster installation and excellent holding strength. Materials available include aluminum, stainless steel and steel so that they may be suitable in a variety of applications. Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products has also designed many of the hinges with a built in grease fitting in order to allow easy lubrication of the hinge in order to increase part life and ease of use. One of our newest features with some of our weld-on hinges are weld guides. These guides help to align the round hinge on a flat surface which can normally be a little tricky. Once the part is aligned the hinge can be welded just like a normal barrel hinge. At SPEP we take great pride in the quality of all of our products. This can be seen in our designs and manufacture of our products as well as our ISO 9001 certification. This certification shows our commitment to quality is a step above and is always on our mind. We are also a 100% ESOP company, so our company name doesn't just stand behind our product, we do too.
An adjustable compression latch is exactly the same as any standard compression latch. It however has the ability to adjust the grip or the distance from the cam to the body of the latch. This creates a very versatile latching solution. Not only can small or large distance be accommodated by one latch but the pull the latch exerts on the door can also be adjusted. This feature is great when there is a gasket around the door. For some applications, it maybe more advantageous to pull the door in tightly or loosely depending on the gasket being used. This can be done simply by adjusting the nuts that hold the cam into position. One latch alone can work for several application improving assembly time as well as allowing the customer to purchase latches in greater quantities.
