Bolt Latches Are Classics

Classics For A Reason

Bolt latches, also known as crossbars, have been around for a long, long time. Hotel room doors often have bolt latches, the kind where you simply slide a post along to bar a door. They are the most basic type of latch, because they use a physical object – the post – to restrict the movement of a door. It’s a pretty simple concept, one that has been in use for thousands of years, but it still has a place nowadays. Historically, bolt latches consisted simply of a post mounted to a door and supported by cleats. To lock the door, the bolt was slid out and through the cleats on the other surface, preventing the door from being opened. It was just physical impediment.

Nowadays, bolt latches are a bit more refined, but the same concepts apply. Metal posts slide through metal brackets, and similar brackets are attached to the opposite door or surface. When the door is closed and locked, the post extends into the adjacent set of cleats to prevent the door from opening. Engineers that create Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products bolt latches understand that although the basic design is sound and strong, even the classics can be improved upon. Our bolt latches are either made of aluminum, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, or even thermoplastic; they can use a barrel system, a rotary system, a slam system, or a spring pull system. The possibilities are endless, but the design always revolves around a classic concept: that of a bolt physically preventing opening of the door.
