Butt hinges are the backbone of any door and they are in constant use, so durability and longevity of these parts are essential. A butt hinge is designed to be inset, or mortised, into both the doorframe and door. This type of hinge is usually made with a small number of overlapping knuckles (three or four), compared with a continuous hinge.
